Shk. Rashid bin Maktoom?! Now mind you, I'm not very familiar with the proper naming of the Shiekhs, but according to my understanding, the late Ruler of Dubai was Shiekh Maktoom bin Rashid Al Maktoom and his brother Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid is currently the Ruler, However, i was a tad bit confused becuase the picture placed on the page did not hold the correct name. Last time i checked, he (Shiekh Maktoom) didn't look like (Shiekh Mohammed) and i could've sworn that the picture placed is of Shk. Mo, so what went wrong there exactly?! Now Somebody correct me if I'm wrong but is there a Shiekh Rashid bin Maktoom, or let's just say the editors didn't do their job well?!I don't know about this magazine much, but they need to work a little more on the editing bit, coz we might have a few people who are probably not very familiar with the looks of either sheikhs, let alone the names!

Anyway, that's beside the point (but i still think they should sort it out) of this post, just wanted to rub that in, the point being, what really caught my attention was his (not sure who exactly, but let's assume its Shk. Mak/ or as the Picture depicts Sheikh Mo.) quote on development which stated "The joy is on doing something that has never been attempted before. Otherwise, there is no point in trying it at all."

Now tell me, he didn't practice what he preached?! Dubai has proven to do everything it has set its mind to. Only 10% of Dubai's GDP comes from oil, the rest of it comes from the various growing sectors such as real estate, retail, wholesale, tourism and many more. Sheikh Mohammed has always been passionate about business development, as he once quoted: "We believe that the role of the government should be restricted to legislation and regulation, in addition to the continuous development of the infrastructure - thus making the private sector the engine of the development process."

Some people may be cynical about it and think that it is going a little OTT with it's attempt to develop into a unique world renowned city, some may argue and say "it's just going to be an artificial city", or even say "It's crazy!" and "Will they get their money back for all the developments?!", Damn it, look at the palm, they managed to sell most of their apartments before the building was finished, and guess what, most of the buyers were International Investors. All I have to say is, this is just their initiative to prove Dubai's ever-growing potential. The traffic maybe out of control, there may be a lack of culture in the air, probably quite a large population of expatriate in fact 80% of its population are expatriates, but at the end of the day, just look at it. They've got the resources and they've put it to use, main objective: business development, bring in the Benjamin’s, recognition, standing out in the world map, provide the best services for its people and the neighboring countries, better yet, provide local and international investors with money. The Sky's the limit with Dubai as my dad likes to say, it remains to have an electrifying economy and as long as it can bring busiess to the city, nothing's going to stop it from growing.

Mad props to you sheikh. I salute you for this accomplishment.

What's your take on the development?!

'You are the cornerstone of the future’ - HM Sultan Qaboos of Oman

As i was flippin through the pages of Oman Observer this morning, i came across this article on the Features section on Aisha Al Khurusi; and I thought to myself... What made it so rewarding was having an employer who had confidence in me and the same goes with my experience here at Boeing,” she adds.

Click the Oman Daily Observer Link to read more...

"We choose our joys and sorrows long before we experience them."

Happy New Year Dear Bloggers!

Hope this year will bring happiness, health, security and prosperity to you and your family and may all good things come your way!

Before, i continute, the above quote is by "Kahlil Gibran", i read that quote before, but until recently, i wouldn't have agreed more. :)

Another year to look ahead at, more decisions to make, problems to face, tears to shed, more
good days and bad. A whole lot to experience.

I think last year was an interesting one for me; I had come across many things, people, and incidents. I came to realize that I have become patient towards certain issues in life, I’ve become tolerant, or probably my way of taking things in and bottling up worries and emotions are through patience?! I don't know. However, I know the year ended with quiet a few tests with my emotions. Incredible I tell you, incredible.

Because of that, I have decided to change my way handling different issues, I’ve decided that I can't stand and watch things happen whilst I sit and take it all in, that if i don't speak up or show how I feel it will never be heard or seen, therefore, i need to push myself to fight for what I deserve. The past year has made me realize that opportunities will not sit there waiting for me to grab it, I need to get a good grip of it and make use of it. I just need to decide on the choices I take, instead of letting fate choose it for me.

Have you ever been a "what-if" situation?! A situation where something occurred and due to other reasons distracting you from taking a step/action, was unable to continue with your journey, experience and you were left wondering "what if"?!

Would you fight for something you feel you deserve, however, you know the chances of getting it are slim?

Have you ever been in a situation where you watched that one thing you cherished and appreciated slip away from you, yet you were too afraid to run after it because you were afraid to be disappointed?!

Well i don't know, but I’ve gone through these situation and I don't think I’ve learnt how to deal with the end result, which is complete disappointment. Life can test you in many ways, we sometimes feel like its unfair that we have to go through so much stress, heartache, remorse or disappointment, but I guess its what makes you stronger at the end of the day, but question is, how do you handle all this, especially when you feel you're alone?! How do you handle the wrong choices you've made in life? I believe the choices we make in life be it right or wrong is part of the experiences we face and is what instills the strength in us. However, sometimes we don't know how to handle the wrong choices we've made. I know I for one haven't been doing a good job.

Life!

Thoughts, Weddings & Tradition - Random!

I know I’ve neglected my blog. I would like to wish all the fellow Bloggers a Belated Eid Mubarak, I meant to blog this Eid, but I got caught up with the Eid hype and by the time it was over I was just too excited to type it all out.

I've just been having such a difficult time putting my thoughts down. I've realized that I’m settling for the conventional method of diary writing. I've got heaps of diaries at home that I’ve collected over the years (Yes, I collect Diaries and very cute and unusual ones as well, you're welcome to come see them) and just recently I decided to put all my thought down.

The past few months have been interesting I must say. The year is coming to an end and as I look back at the months gone by I realized that I have experienced so many interesting incidents, events & things. However, there have been so many days where I felt really down and de-motivated, hence the decision to write on my personal journal.

OK, enough with all the melodramatic gibberish and on to the gist of my entry. Note that this is a self argumentative random thought that just popped up in my head due to the fact that my foreign colleagues have pointed a few aspects of our weddings out. As we "the Omanis, gulf nationals or Arabs in general" know, December is our wedding season, so we've got women all over the place looking for right outfits to show off at the wedding and we've got tailors already refusing to take materials (that's if you're one to tailor them dresses) and then there's the issue of going down to Dubai to shop for gowns, coz unfortunately we don't have many choices out here, so basically, its women going crazy over the endless invitations to extravagant weddings. I know, how dramatic!

See, this understandable and I guess it happens to the best of societies. However, my self argument is, coming from an Arab culture, I find it that we lack the cultural atmosphere when it comes to our weddings, ok, maybe lack is not the word I’m looking for, but I feel that our weddings are starting to lose their identity, for the sheer reason that women in our society these days are leaning towards a more westernized approach to their weddings, where the woman is dressed in an all white wedding gown that reveals parts of her body in some cases (that’s just the girl’s personal choice - Respect) and the bride’s maids who enter along with her who again are either in white or some other flashy colors with those little rose baskets that makes them all soo adorable. OK, I know you're wondering where I’m going with this, but don't you see it?! What’s with the white, bridesmaids and all that jazz? You could argue and say that it's only a reception celebration and on the actual "Malka, 3aqd" - "Matrimonial ceremony" you are dressed in green or adhere to our Arabic traditions. I know that everyone is entitled to their decision on how their wedding should be like and that the weddings is not complete without a reception with the white gown, bride’s maid, cake and watnot, but think about it, really, does that convey our wedding traditions? Ummm.. Not really! I know we'd like to believe that it has already been accepted and has become part of “our tradition" but for those guests who come from abroad to celebrate our weddings, I mean international guests, can't help but comment on the fact that our weddings are very western influenced. I guess it happens not only in our society, we've got a few Asian societies that follow the west; however, I don't see why we should?

We go to a wedding today, whether it's at the Henna or Reception and I feel that most of them have become very standard or has a slight twist to it just to make it look a lil different, however, nothing represents our culture anymore, I mean for God's sake, we've got brides wearing the Indian wedding attires to their 7enna and walk in with some melodramatic Indian track I can't help but find it hilarious!

I'm not one to talk about following traditions I’ll have to admit and not the conventional type of gal, but I can't help but argue to myself about why are we deteriorating from our culture and traditions, why don't our weddings have a sense of tradition to it anymore, do we even know how a typical “Omani or any other Arab wedding” is celebrated?!”, trust me some have actually said “they don’t!”. Are we starting to appreciate other ways of celebrating weddings and neglecting ours, is it just the fact that we are after something different, how do we justify ourselves and why is it that other cultures don't adopt our ways of celebrating or dressing in weddings, aren't we interesting, classy, different enough for them to adopt or are they happy to stick to their ways and traditions?! I'm at an age where I can't help but plan for that "perfect wedding" and I start to wonder "why the white dress, bride's maids, cake and the ring bearer?!" I know I don't have to do all that and no one is forcing me to, but you know how society judges that one night just because it wasn't an "All white wedding", more like "Western influenced wedding". I’m still contemplating mine, but for now I still wonder where our weddings will end up when matters of tradition and culture come in hand?! Would you go for the conventional type of wedding with a twise of Modernization or would you just settle for what we call and believe to be our standard way of celebration?!

Life!

OER Champions of Progress

"OER Champions of Progress, a youth empowering initiative that will for the first time give the youth of <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 />Oman, an invaluable opportunity to connect with the country's corporate sector.<?xml:namespace prefix = o />

OER Champions of Progress is an exclusive, high profile forum for the youth of Oman to express their ideas on issues related to Oman's socio-economic progress. In addition, the topics provided for presentation are exceptionally well chosen and I believe it should allow students from the various colleges and universitie(s) in Oman to get involved and network with managers "corporate bigwigs" and representatives of some of the leading organisations in various industries and get acquainted, enhance their knowledge to the various issues that pertain to the development of Oman.

Better yet, i think this is a great opportunity and experience for Omani students especially after they graduate from uni, i don't know, but from what I’ve been seeing, most of the graduates today lack the motivation, drive and knowledge required and this can act as a boost or a launch pad to increasing awareness, help students get involved in research, allow them to think outside of the box, an opportunity to add weight to their CV, help motivate them into getting involved in other forums, build confidence, take challenges and of course teamwork, all which are highly required and looked at in the employment process. Question is how universities and colleges can motivate their students to the step and get involved in this forum, not in an academic level, but rather on a level of achievement, research, personal knowledge and to share with the public? What determines our judgement? How do you know when a person is of good character or bad? What's the first thing you pay attention to when meeting a person for the first time?

Another question that went through my mind the other day is how can we judge a person through electronic means, how do we determinetheir characters? For example, if you were to chat, sms, email or read a person's blog, how would you justify their character, especially if you've neverpersonally met them or know very little about their personality?

Som people are easy to read and their personality is very out in the open and others can be very quite and have a mysterious aura about them, that we fail to see their true colors, however, its not always the case, because i feel that sometimes, we as individuals don't pay much attention to the obvious in people that we fail to judge an individuals personality/character.

They say "never judge a book by its cover"

Do you know whether you're a good judge of character or are you bad at it?

Thought

Thoughts:

Note – This is a random thought really, something I wanted to put down.

We live in a small world and its amazing how sometimes we encounter situations that or meet people who could make a big difference to our lives or impact us. Take the time, sit back and think about all the random situations, happiest and saddest moments that we go through in life.

Isn't it just amazing? We need to appreciate life and our surroundings sometimes and not remorse on the mistakes and mishaps we've done or gone through. Everything in life happens for a reason, whether good or bad. Remember, life's a learning experience and a test, sometimes we just can’t question it. Let's appreciate it more often and thank Allah for all he's put us through.

Life!

<img border='0' style='border:1px solid #000000; I congratulate the government on it's unconditional efforts to provide prosperity and harmony to the people of Oman. Thanks to HM Sultan Qaboos bin Said, for the vision he had laid out for our country, thus providing a peaceful, secure and stable nation.

Oman's come a long way by breaking through the barriers that once left the country limited in many aspects. From poverty and despair to modernization and hope. From times where resources such as health, education and sense of security was not of close reach to a country flourished with the best health facilities available at every part of the sultanate to advance education compulsory to all, accommodated to difference backgrounds and available everywhere, to the development of a multi-faceted armed forced known for its high level combat ability and a police force of high caliber.

Oil has also played an important role in the development of the country and the main boost in the economic growth of this country. However, within the past year other industries have emerged to help in the future and hopefully prosperous growth of the country. Industries such as, Liquefied Natural Gas, Chemical Industries, Methanol and Derivatives, Power Company, Port Shipping Services, Energy, Cement, Agriculture, Fisheries, Tourism and many more emerging. It's definitely a great achievement what we all are proud of.

I could go on about what we have achieved in the past 35 years, but I think I’ve pretty much summed it up. I am grateful for what HM leadership has done for us and the opportunities that he has opened for his people be it men or women to help build this nation to where it is now and we only pray that May Allah provide us with prosperity, security, good health and happiness and may we work hard to achieve the goals of this country by keeping it a safe place for us to live and all the best for our beloved Oman.

For further details on Oman and This Day:
- Facts about Oman
- Intro to Oman
- A day to cherish and celebrate
- Oman’s Renaissance
- Ministry of Information (Info about Oman)

The Doha Debates

I was referred to this show by a friend and honestly i'm quite impressed by it. The Doha Debates a show aired in BBC World, are a public forum for dialogue and freedom of speech in Qatar, in which speakers are invited to debate issues of the Islamic and Arab world in front of a large audiance. The audiance are also allowed to participate in the debates where they can ask questions. The Debates are chaired by the internationally renowned broadcaster Tim Sebastian, formerly of the BBC's HARDTalk programme.

Yesterday's debate "believed that Arab women should have full equality with men" and the motion was passed.

It was a heated discussion between the two parties, where they discussed issues of how women in the arab and islamic world should have equal rights as men do, how they should fight for their rights in the society and should not expect men to provide every opportunity to them, "if women want it, then they should fight and speak up to get it". Other issues included how the west influences women in the Mid-East, especially in issues of contraception, abbortion ...etc

Then there was the issue of women being forced to get married and unfortunately have no choice or say of their own, how women are look down upon in many arab countries, whether it is at work, home or out in the public and what Islam says about women's opportunities and where they stand. Basically, the motion was about "Equity and Equality of women", even though it did go a little off topic, however, the arguments made were quite valid. The audiance were from different backgrounds, society, countries, which was very good as you get to hear the different inputs. The speakers on the other hand were quite interesting, they brought in muslim speakers from both arab and western worlds with strong arguments regarding the topic.

Unfortunately, the show wont be on for the summer, however, will return in September for its second season. Do check the link below for past debates, which i must say quite interesting, you can also view the transcripts. Other past debates included:

- The war on terror has become a war on Islam
- George Bush has kicked open the door to democracy in the Middle East
- The Middle East Road Map for peace is dead

Doha Debates
Press Release on the Debate

Enjoy!

Any inputs?

Al Madina Al Zarqa "The Blue City" Development

A mixed urban development project based in Al Sawadi, creating a sustained value for Oman and its visitors. The first phase of the development will focus on tourism and include 4.5 km of beach and waterfront. 3 Beach resorts, 1 golf resort and 1 city beach resort / conference hotel which will operated by leading 5-star hotel chains. In addition, The Blue City will include an arabian style tourist village with a souq, apartments and boutiques, an aquarium and an amphitheatre. The other phases to be built will revolove around the Education, Healthcare, Sports and Marine Sectors.

Apart from the tourism that it will potenitally invite in the future, this project focuses on fulfilling the social, economical and cultural objectives, in which it will create massive job opportunities for the local community. This will help reduce the unemployment rate. In addition, it will definately generate educational and professional opportunities from throughout the country.

I guess the government is starting to look more into the tourism industry as a source of producing revenue. It's definately a good step towards placing Oman on top of the tourism map. It's been a while and the attacks come randomly. However, it puzzles me because the symptoms describing this disease is far more than what i have experienced.

The following is what i have been suffering from:
- Initially it was an excruciating pain at one side of my head, starting from the forehead and spreading towards the middle of the head. (Painfull)

- The attack would happen randomly, very incosistent. It came to a point where i was litterally in tears once and could not open my eyes.

- I visited a couple of doctors initially, was given usless medications to treat my problem, in fact, i was told that it must have been as a result of stress at work.

- The medication prescribed didn't serve its purpose and i went back again, this time i was given an eye test, and guess what.. the same medication... when i inquired if i could be transfered to a neurologist, she said and i quote "i dont think your problem is that severe, dont worry about it, it should reduce with the medication"

- I gave a few days, then just resorted to the neurologist. I was given a couple of tests and eventually he diagnosed me with having migraines... and was prescribed medications to specifically treat this problem.

- I took the medication for a while and eventually noticed an improvement and so i discontinued. Now for the past month, i have been experiencing inconsistent what i believe are headaches, however, recently it has started to act more as what i would believe "a migrane, i feel the sensitivity to light", however, the pain isn't so bad and eventually disappears.

Now The symptoms described in the webpage i linked below includes:
- Nausea (don't recall feeling nauseated)
- Vomiting (Didn't suffer from this - Al7amdulilah)
- Auras (light spots) (I recall seeing light spots)
- Sensitivity to light and sound (a recent observation)
- Numbness, difficulty in speech, and severe semihemispherical head pain. (Nope!)
- One Migraine attack alone can last for eight hours, several days, or even weeks. (An hour, very inconsistent, random days, or time of the week)

Thus, my question is, am i really suffering from the migraines disease?? Because from what I've listed above, i feel that i am probably not going through the exact symptoms unlike other people i know who've been suffering from the disease.

- The website also states that sometimes the disease can be "MISDIAGNOSED, MISTREATED AND THE LEAST UNDERSTOOD DISEASES." (I've experienced this initially and I'm glad i went for a different opinion. However, it worries me)

For those of you who are not familiar with what migraines are here is a website that can give you an insight of what it is: Migraines . It can give you a description of what a migraine is and what are the myths and realities stated about the disease. It's a good education.

Life!

The Pearl - Qatar

I'm in love with it already.

It's an island with an atomosphere of the riviera in the arabian gulf. She developed this website to honor the women she has met here in Oman, to share the true teachings of Mohammed (peace be upon him), and to befriend other Western women who have moved to the Arab World or are considering such a move. I went through her article about why she embraced Islam and I must say i was very proud of the effort that she has put into wanting to convert and the research of both the Islamic and Christian Religion.

One of my favorite bits of the article is in part 4 of Why I embraced Islam where she talks about the Hijab and why we as muslim women have been asked to wear it, it's something i already understand, however, coming from a person who has converted to Islam from a western background and has researched the bible and the quran for evidence to prove this point was interesting, especially for those non-muslim reading this i believe it can give them an insight of the beauty of Islam, the women in Islam and vieling in Islam. Please read the following abstract:

" The "hijab" or modest, covering dress of Muslim women is a subject of much controversy in the West, where it is often seen as a symbol of female oppression and something from which Muslim women need to be liberated. Despite this, it is reported that the number of women converting to Islam is four times greater than the number of men! When people talk of liberating Muslim women from the hijab, what they fail to realise is that practicing Muslim women usually are chosing themselves to wear it to obey Allah and reclaim control over their own bodies. The Holy Quran instructs, "Oh Prophet! Tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks (veils) all over their bodies..." (33:59) As a convert to Islam, rather than finding it to be oppressive, I have found the hijab itself to be liberating. I feel a much greater sense of respect leaving my house in hijab than I did in my pre-Islamic dress. The hijab frees women from the confines of non-Islamic society where her "worth" is primarily determined by her physical appearance. (Why else is it that women in the USA spend billions of dollars each year on hair and beauty aids?) You could say that wearing the hijab is our own version of feminism, our way of affirming that we are far more than a pretty face or shapely figure. It is our protection from the influences which abuse and degrade women. How we look is not the business of every man on the street, but is rather bewteen us and our husbands. "

This is a link of her website, where you can read more of her research and her self-learning journey into Islam:
Oum AbdulAziz
Why I embraced Islam

Bottling Up!

I'm in a whiney mood today, very frustrated. I don't know what to do. Part of me wants to leave the office and just go for a long drive where i can get distracted by the scenary, people or whatever.. something to keep my mind off my frustration. ARRRRRRRGH!

My frustration has been bottling up for a while now and i'm hating this. I've come to a point where I'm waiting for someone to talk to me or irritate me so i can attack. Don't worry, nothing physical, just verbal. If that doesn't happen, then maybe i'll wait for my PC to B*#$& so i throw it away.. OK, i'm getting violent thoughts!

RELAAAX!

I wish I could, but i've got so much in mind that's frustrating me and I've been bottling it up for ages and it's just killing me now. Oh, how rude, I forgot to mention... I've got a problem.. well i dont know whether you could call it a problem.. but anyway, I tend to bottle up my anger, frustration, irritation.. everything. I dont let it all out in the open, i just ignore it and let it build up gradually, until i get to my current state.. overly frustrated, angry.. confused.. irritated.. emotional.. Just pure EVIL. See I get to the point where my inner tumult gradually builds up until it eventually erupts like a volcano. Dangerous.. but I can't help it. I think I NEED HELP!

What's the problem?? Everything.. I think, I don't know.. I'm confused. I think it's probably alot of things that's been happening for a while just waiting to erupt and today something decided to trigger all the frustration and now I'm on a roll.

I guess i'll just try to do my work and keep myself as busy as possible and maybe I'll forget about it. Hmm.. Retail therapy is always good. Should I?? hmm.. maybe not, I'm committed to a couple of stuff. so I should behave.

OK.. it's a phase i'm going through. I think maybe typing it all out has released some of the my ire. Heheh.. my poor keyboard, I've been abusing the keys.

OK. Frustration over. Back to work and maybe get myself cofee.

Life!

Pathalogical Liars

I was watching the Oprah show last night that discussed Pathalogical Liars. It was an interesting and eye opening show about how people can get trapped in their own lies and drag their loved ones with them. This is a sickness that can be found everywhere. The thought of having a close friend or a family member who is a pathological liar is scary. We just hope that we dont get trapped in the web of the lies and do the necessary if possible.

The guest of the show is a married woman and a mother of two, who decided to discuss the sickness she's been suffering from them and to come clean about it and admit that she's a pathological liar. She tells the viewers, how she has lied about her children being sick and diagnosing one with cancer just to get attention from friend and family. She's lied about the holiday's she been on, the meals she cooks, she lied about wanting to commit suicide to her friends. All this just to get some attention and sympathy from people. By dragging two of her best friends in the web of lies, she eventually drove them away from her, as it came to a point where they had enough of her never-ending lies and the emotional pain that it has caused them. The woman also admitted to not having any guilt whenever she lied to her friends and family.

Her friends were also in the show and the confronted her about her situation and told the viewers how much they had gone through in all these years of friendship. The feel bad for their friend, but have to a point where they can no longer giver her any suuport, because it has taken up so much of their time an energy that should be kept for their own families. They've lost trust in thier friend and just wonder now when was she ever truthful to them??

I guess there's a reason why we are asked in court to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. We all lie sometimes and for many reasons, either to cover up for ourselves or others, or to avoid hurting someone's feelings, or when making business, some people lie because of low self-esteem the list is endless..

A psychologist on the show discussed the problem that woman had and that she basically hated and had no respect for herself. What she was doing was lying to herself and her surroundings, because she hated her life, was ashamed of herself and the way her life's been. She's been using lying as a cover up for the flaws that she had in her life, lying to her was an addiction, she would get a high and sence of achivement everytime she lied, it was her saftey blancket. She lied to portray a life she never had so to impress the people around her. Lying gave her a sense of satisfaction.

It can be very shocking what lying can do to oneself and it's a shame that some poeple have put themselves in this situation where if the required help is not provided, can lead to self destruct. "A pathological liar believes in the lies, at least at the time that she or he is talking. Their stories tend to be very dramatic. They often portray the person as being smarter, braver, more attractive, or more interesting than she or he really is. Sometimes people begin to catch onto pathological liars because of obvious flaws in the stories. Sometimes the flaws may be more subtle and it may take a knowledgeable person to find them.

Suspect a pathological liar if:
- the stories seem too dramatic or unrealistic
- the lies seem to serve no purpose except to impress people or
- the lies can easily be shown up

The question is, do we lie to an extent of believing our lies, do we miss use the lies we tell, are we hurting the people around us by lying, are we hurting ourselves??? How can we stop ourselves from this problem, in fact, do we realise that it's a problem we have??? Is it possible that we can induce pathological lying in ourselves?? If you have a friend or a family member who comes under this category, do help out before its too late, confrontation is good.

Life!

My Book Club - Vanishing Acts

I'm currently reading this book by Jod Picoult called "Vanishing Acts". An interesting book i must say. Eventhough we may not relate to that story, the concept of it is something we experience every day. When we think the people close to us are the ones who will be honest and open, sometimes we can be wrong. When we think we know our friends and families very well, we can be very wrong. Trust is important and so is honesty. We can't help it sometimes if we dont know what happening around us or if we dont know the people we think we do, but it can be devestating and dissapointing when we learn the truth. I guess that's life.

Here's a look at what's it about:

From Publishers WeeklyDelia Hopkins was six years old when her father allowed her to be his assistant in the amateur magic act he performed at the local senior center's annual Christmas pageant. "I learned a lot that night," recalls Delia, who is now 32, at the start of Picoult's absorbing new novel (her 12th, after My Sister's Keeper). "That people don't vanish into thin air...." She has come to know this even better as an adult: she makes her living finding missing people with her own search-and-rescue bloodhound. As she prepares for her wedding, however, Delia has a flash of memory that is so vivid yet so wildly out-of-place among the other memories from her idyllic New Hampshire upbringing that she describes it to a childhood friend, who happens to be a reporter. Soon, her whole world and the world of the widowed father she adores is turned upside down. Her marriage to her toddler's father, a loving but still struggling recovering alcoholic, is put on hold as she is forced to conduct a search-and-rescue mission on her own past and identity. It will cut to the heart of what she holds to be true and good. As in previous novels, Picoult creates compelling, three-dimensional characters who tell a story in alternating voices about what it might mean to be a good parent and a good person, to be true to ourselves and those we love. Picoult weaves together plot and characterization in a landscape that is fleshed out in rich, journalistic detail, so that readers will come away with intriguing questions rather than pat answers.

Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. It's a comeplling, sad movie which is based on a true story, that happened in Ruwanda sometime in 1993/ 1994 i believe. Let me give you an insight on the outline of the plot:

Don Cheadle stars in this movie where he portrays Paul Resesa... something, a hotel manager who granted shelter in his hotel to over 1000 of helpless tutsi refugees during their strugle against the Hutu malitia in Ruwanda who brutally murdered them. Inspite of the vast means of communication, fast spreading news and endless call for help, this event went almost unnoticed by the rest of the world. It is an ugly indictment of the West's refusal to intervene in a crisis that allowed unspeakable slaughter to occur. The western countries managed to evacuate their people from the city during this period, leaving the country deal with the brutal genocidal clash on its own with no aid what so ever.

It's quite a powerful and moving story and makes you realise that this is something the continues to happen in many countries around the world, where inncoent people are tortured and killed, kids who lose thier parents and families or have to watch them and the rest being brutally murdered because of their ethnicity, nationality, race and or religion. This movie also portrays how governments and the media can selectively focus on preferred problems in the world and selectively ignore others.

All in all, good movie, worth watching and well acted by Don Cheadle.

Check this link out for further details on the movie and reviews:
Hotel Rwanda Official Site
Enjoy!

Sometimes you can run but you can't hide

Hehee.. feeling evil. Well.. hmm let's say I was a bit cheeky today. (smiley with a halo over the head. Uhh, blogpost would provide emoticons, sometimes you can express one's self better through them).

Ok, back to the topic. Welll.. i had an interesting experience today with a friend. The friend happend to avoid having lunch with me for some reason, went beating around the bush and giving me a hard time instead of directly telling from the start that lunch with me was impossible. Finally, the friend said that he will be going for lunch but was invited and refused to tell me where. I thought it was interesting that he didn't want to mention the venue but managed to tell me the area, but hey.. it's non of my business. The end result was that i ended up alone and had to go lunch hunting on my own near by.

This is where i was entertained, i get to the restaurant and before entering, to my surprise, i caught my friend there with the special someone who he decided to have lunch with. Thing is, it wasn't the area he specified to me earlier... i wonder why???! hehehe

Anyhoo, I thought it was cute, coz i happened to know the other person. So i gave them time to get to their seating area before i went in, coz I know that it would be uncomfortable for him to see me, as he had 'i hate to say' lied about where he was going and hid the whole deal. I get in the restaurant, make my order and before i left decided to sms my friend an alert message, just to surprise him. The end!

Well not really, i did meet him later, where he was overacting and a bit embarrassed by the situation, but i made sure that i didn't make him feel bad about it.

Moral of this story, sometimes... we tend to run and hide things from people for our own reasons, whether good or bad, silly or serious & innocent. We tend to even lie about it, make up stories and try to give excuses at the end (if caught or not), but we forget that we can never hide it for too long before the truth is out. We all go through situations like this, with friends, acquiantances, family members, where we take desperate measure to run away from people/ hide about things just to keep a low profile, believing that it's the safest and less dramatic.
(OK, whati type after this is basically a result of having lost 2 complete paragraphs due to some random button that i clicked by mistake, luckily the above pragraph was ssaved. Damn! i hate it when this happens)

Anyway, all in all... my friend approached me, but withuot mentioning it, i assured him that it was history and i didn't see anything. He never confronted me about the purpose of hiding and the relationship between him and other friend, nor did i ask. I didn't think he owed me much explanation since he didn't want me to know about this in the first place. However, he lost his purpose of hiding and i caught him. My choice was to ignore it happened and keep it between us and not assume the incident excpet that it was just a friendly luch between him and friend i should not feel bad about it. See, that's my choice, others would take another approach to this, some would assume the situation and make it a big deal, i guess that's the who point of hiding and running away sometimes, avoid unappriciated rumors and false thoughts. However, doing that just results in negative thinking. Uhhh, it all depends on the situation. Everyone makes the choices that they think is best for them.

Life!

On holiday!

I'm back, after disappearing for a good 4 weeks or more. I was on holiday, and in fact, i still am.
It was amazing, loved every minute of it. It was a new and different experience and it allowed me to relax and release all the stress that i've been going through the past two years. I have to admit, i needed it. I'm so in holiday mode, that i'm starting to get friends and family excited about going on holiday. I guess sometimes we all need to let lose and relax.

*Some juicy bits edited*

I must admit, it was a great experience and enjoyed every minute of it. However, by the time it all ended I was surprised at how fast the days have gone. Now I'm back home, where the heat is just starting warm up for summer. So far its bareable, but i know it wont be long before it gets piercing.

I'm still on holiday, my last week and trying my best to recover from my jet lag, its pretty confusing, coz i stay up till the wee hours of the morning, (i.e 5 - 6 am), then i sleep bout 6 hours before i wake up again. I hope i get my sleeping dilemma sorted before i start work. *fingers crossed*

Life!

Highly Effective

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People

Habit 1: Be Proactive
Change starts from within, and highly effective people make the decision to improve their lives through the things that they can influence rather than by simply reacting to external forces.

Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind
Develop a principle-centered personal mission statement. Extend the mission statement into long-term goals based on personal principles.

Habit 3: Put First Things First
Spend time doing what fits into your personal mission, observing the proper balance between production and building production capacity. Identify the key roles that you take on in life, and make time for each of them.

Habit 4: Think Win/Win
Seek agreements and relationships that are mutually beneficial. In cases where a "win/win" deal cannot be achieved, accept the fact that agreeing to make "no deal" may be the best alternative. In developing an organizational culture, be sure to reward win/win behavior among employees and avoid inadvertantly rewarding win/lose behavior.

Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood
First seek to understand the other person, and only then try to be understood. Stephen Covey presents this habit as the most important principle of interpersonal relations. Effective listening is not simply echoing what the other person has said through the lens of one's own experience. Rather, it is putting oneself in the perspective of the other person, listening empathically for both feeling and meaning.

Habit 6: Synergize
Through trustful communication, find ways to leverage individual differences to create a whole that is greater than the sum of the parts. Through mutual trust and understanding, one often can solve conflicts and find a better solution than would have been obtained through either person's own solution.

Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw
Take time out from production to build production capacity through personal renewal of the physical, mental, social/emotional, and spiritual dimensions. Maintain a balance among these dimensions.

Source: Quick MBA

Some Knowlege for the day!

Feel Bad

Hehehe.. i can't help but feel bad about not loging in to my blog. I just get too worked up and since i work with computers, i tend to avoid using it when i get back home. I just want to relax and concentrate on something with less effort and thinking. Lazy!

Its been a hectic week for me, work, work and work. I'm piled up with it, its terrible. I've come to a point where i dont want to socialise or go out. I'm litterally dragged out of my house these days. Yes. Its that bad. Thing is, when i do finally make it outside of the house, i feel better and in fact enjoy myself very much. I guess when you dont go out for a while in muscat and then make a sudden exit, you do have a great time and dont find the place very boring.

Another reason for not wanting to go out, is coz i'm trying to save up alot of money, to travel. I dont know whether it'll happen, but got my fingers crossed and hope i'll be able to get out of the country and enjoy myself away from the drama, stress and the dullness. Its sad but true and I know I'll miss home once i'm a way and want to come back soon. A short trip away will do though. It will, coz i really need one.

Rain, Thunder, Lightning

Very Un-Omani weather i must say. Left to work this morning and couldn't help but notice the cloudy weather, Awful, i must say. I know, you may think.. WHAT?! Oman experiences heat for most of the year, what are you complaining about?!

Well, i may dispise the weather when its hot, however, i do miss the sunshine when its cloudy, especially when we see more cloud then sun in two months. Uh, Uh, that's not my kind of weather, no sir.

Unfortunately, i couldn't get away from the weather and had to make it out to a client meeting. Luckily i managed to get the driver at work to take me there. Damn! the traffic was terrible. I hated every minute of the trip to my destination, the thunder, lightning.. which does not appeal to me, was just making me sick in the car. Oh, plus, let's not forget, the muddy roads, flooded with water, that with my excellent luck ruined the Abayaa that i wore and filled it with wet mud... ewwww..

I'm in a very complaining mood at the mo, i dont think the weather has made my day today, no it hasn't. I only thank Allah, that he has blessed us with rain in this country of ours and pray he blesses us with more of it in the future, but i would love to see the sunshine, not too hot or humid, but i think i would appericiate a pleasent cool breeze with sunshine falling down on us.

Life!

Men & Birthdays, Weekends and trying to relax

So I had an interesting weekend, where i spent time with family and friends. Dad grew a year older on Wednesday... in total denial... which was funny to observe...

what is it with men and their birthdays, why are they always freaking out on that one day of the year which represents their birth. I wanetd to celebrate his birthday, but knew he'd probably avoid it like the plague, he is not soo fond of celebrating it. Therefore, i shopped for an appropriate/ appealing presie for him and gave it to him... he was much more excited about the present than the fact it was his birthday, infact i didn't get the chance to rub the whole year older factor on him... but it was nice to see his excited impression and appericiation for the presie... i was proud of my choice.. proud.. very proud.

Other than that, i spent the weekend attempting to relax... which was not quite successful, coz i dedicated the time to commitment i made with friends to go out for coffee, breakfast and oh... hehehe... going to renew the car registration and paying for road violations i committed... DAMN was i annoyed i had to pay so much. I guess from now on, i'll try to be cautious when driving and try to avoid the radars flashin on me.

Well, i guess that's pretty much my weekend...

Abandoned, But Back With More To Blog

I'm back and it's been almost a good month since i last blogged. It's been such a while of abandoning my blog from my thoughts and experiences in my day to day life that i lead.
I think the problem was that i wasn't sure whether i wanted to share that with the world. How selfish, I know. Your next question would be "why bother bloggin then. Or, you dont need to share your thoughts with the world, no one is forcing you to". Perhaps its just the idea of letting everything out of my system, something that i dont normally do. Infact, coming to think about it, it's a good idea to start openin up to one's self and people. I guess i've blabbered enough to fill the blog for today. A good start I would have to admit. This is just the begining of a long good bloggin to come.

Cheers

My First Blog..Woo Hooo

This is my first blog, I really dont know whether I'll be using it much. I dont even know why i created it in the first place. I think its all the hype from everyone who already have their own and are being soo creative in it. I think its a good opportunity to share thoughts, information, knowledge and culture to friends, family and everyone out there who will probably visit it.

And let the bloggins begin!
